Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation
PMH Foundation is the principal fundraising body for Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), providing Western Australia’s only specialist children’s hospital with vital medical equipment, specialist services, capital projects, scholarships, education and expertise. Since the Foundation was established in 1998 it has raised more than 17 million dollars for PMH. In recent years major funding has been allocated to a new pain management project, the establishment of the Children’s Rehabilitation Centre and ongoing research. The Foundation has also provided nearly a quarter of the equipment currently used by the hospital. PMH Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life of all sick West Australian children. An increased demand on hospital facilities and the rapid advancement of modern medical technology means realising this goal is a never-ending task. This year the PMH Foundation will be raising funds for a ventricular assist device (VAD) which is a very important facility to have available in a Cardiac Centre operating on children. The VAD system takes over the functioning of the heart for a short period of time. It rests the main pumping chamber (the left ventricle) while it has time to recover from the stress of an open heart procedure. It can also be used in other life-threatening situations, such as myocarditis (viral infection of the heart) and muscle diseases of the heart.
